I walk for miles...in maple syrup...

This morning, I woke up feeling as if I had been drugged. Which was an odd sensation because I had fallen asleep uncharacteristically early and without aide last night. I thought for a minute that I might be getting sick…and now I think my body is just on strike. It doesn’t want to come to work. It doesn’t want to drive the car. It doesn’t want to pack things. It wants to go swimming. (I am not sure why that is the only thing that the body wants to do, it just is so.) My brain is cloudy and feels loose in my head. Medicine head minus the medicine. I can’t explain it.

I was thinking this morning about the day Spliff and I spent drinking early afternoon Coronas in the sand. My doctor had sent me home from work for a few days due to illness and as soon as I walked in the door, the cooler was out, Jay had his baggies and his board, and we were out the door again. I think it was about noon. I hadn’t even eaten yet but there we were, in the hot sun working quickly toward an afternoon buzz and a very early bedtime.

I remember after Jay left, there were attempts at a frozen pizza and “The Crow”. The pizza cooked faster than we had expected and filled the house with the smell of burning crust. Hence, the song was born. Just in the moment when we thought the house was burning down, I started to sing without even realizing what I was saying (in the tune of “Beast of Burden”), “I’ll never be, your pizza burnin’” and then, roaring laughter followed. Laughter for a sick day full of afternoon drunkenness, burning pizza, and new Rolling Stones lyrics…(You didn’t really think we let the song end THERE did you?)

This, my friends, is the kind of day that I miss. This is what friendship is about. Uncontrollable laughter and silliness without restraint.
