Day 30: Your Favorite Song at This Time Last Year
First and foremost, I would like to say that this is ridiculous. At the start of this challenge, I had a hard enough time trying to figure out what my favorite song was THEN. Now I am supposed to remember last year’s favorite song? What?!
I am going to go out on a limb here and go ahead and say that I was listening to a lot of Rocky Votolato at this time last year. I have no idea if this is an accurate statement. But I can be sure about one thing. I heart Rocky Votolato. A couple of years ago, Pookie’s ex turned me on to him and I couldn’t have been more in love. I can also go ahead and say that if I was listening to Rocky this time last year, then I was probably listening to “White Daisy Passing” which is a beautiful (albeit sad) song. And if I was listening to that song, then I was most likely listening to it over and over and over again, thinking about people from my past and either wishing that they were around or wishing that I had punched them in the face when I had the opportunity. Either way…amazing song!

Day 26: A Song You Wish You Could Play
Okay, internet, yes. I realize that I haven’t posted anything in a really long time. And I probably should have tried to be realistic about doing this in thirty days. But I am still on it. I swear. Thing Two and I have had a lot of company and a lot of debauchery at our house. And, well, honestly, I am exhausted.
Okay, so here goes. First of all, I think I have already told you that the only instrument I can play is the kazoo (and possibly the triangle, I suppose, depending on the difficulty of the song). That being said, it is safe to say that EVERY song is a song that I wish I could play. So, I really had a lot to choose from here. I thought about a bunch of songs that I would love to be able to play. And I kept ending up at the same place, Mates of State.
I am sure there are way more obvious songs out there. And I am sure there are way more complicated ones, or beautiful ones, or touching ones. But I really, really, really love Mates of State and the dynamic that they have together. Also, I am sort of jealous of anyone who can play the piano (keyboard…whatever.) So, I chose, “My Only Offer”.

Day 26: A Song that You Can Play on an Instrument
Ummm...seriously?
Can most people play instruments? I am going to go ahead and tell you right now, internet, that I have absolutely NO musical ability. I can identify songs by the first two notes. I can recognize the screech of Axl Rose from 15.3 miles away. I once even tugged on Damian Marley's dreadlocks with both hands and he didn't kill me. But I couldn't play the triangle to save my life.
So, I thought, "Well, hell, how the hell is someone as inept as me supposed to answer this question?" But then I realized..."I CAN PLAY THE KAZOO!" And I don't care what you say, internet, the kazoo is a musical instrument. It makes melodies. And I can play it.
Which brought me to my choice of song.
Enjoy!

Day Twenty: A Song You Listen to When You're Angry
I am not really into angry music. Partially because a lot of it is just a bunch of screaming and if I wanted to listen to screaming, I would just go hang out at a daycare or something. Screaming is not really for me. But there are a couple of really great angry songs, that do NOT involve screaming. My favorite song to listen to when I am angry (usually when I am angry at someone in particular) is "Untouchable Face" by the brilliant and talented Ani Difranco. Ani has a lot of really beautiful songs, some are empowering and inspirational and some give the perfect message of "Fuck You". That's this song.

Day Eight: A Song You Know All the Words to
I had a hard time with this. Partially because I know the words to so many songs and I couldn’t figure out which one I am most proud of knowing all the words to. I mean, I seriously could have gone all Color Me Badd on your asses. But I didn’t. And I know you are thankful.I chose a song that I could seriously listen to on repeat for hours (and have in the past). It isn’t the most upbeat or uplifting song, but I think I might be a little in love with Jenny Lewis. I can’t help it, ya’ll! She was on “Growing Pains”! On what planet is that not awesome?!
Anyway, the song I chose is “Pictures of Success” by Rilo Kiley. And I am listening to it now. And probably will listen to it 13 or 14 more times this afternoon.

Day 3: A Song that Makes You Happy
Honestly, internet, this one wasn’t so hard. There are a number of really good songs that just…make me smile (and maybe make me wanna dance around a big). I actually had a list going this morning and had to listen to every song again to make sure that I was choosing the right one. And I did it. I chose ONE song that makes me happy.
“Bowl of Oranges” by Bright Eyes
I don’t typically think cheerful and uplifting when I think of Bright Eyes, but this song is just…fucking happy. And happy looks good on Connor. (And he doesn’t look happy very often, trying to find a picture of him smiling is insanely difficult. Believe me.)
“Bowl of Oranges” – Bright Eyes
The rain, it started tapping on the window near my bed. There was a loophole in my dreaming,
so I got out of it. And to my surprise my eyes were wide and already open.
Just my nightstand and my dresser where those nightmares had just been.
So I dressed myself and left then, out into the gray streets.
But everything seemed different and completely new to me.
The sky, the trees, houses, buildings, even my own body.
And each person I encountered, I couldn't wait to meet.
I came upon a doctor who appeared in quite poor health.
I said "{I am terribly sorry but} there is nothing I can do for you
{that} you can't do for yourself."
He said "Oh yes you can. Just hold my hand. I think that would help."
So I sat with him a while and then I asked him how he felt.
He said, "I think I'm cured. No, in fact, I'm sure.
Thank you Stranger, for your therapeutic smile."
So that is how I learned the lesson that everyone is alone.
And your eyes must do some raining if you are ever going to grow.
But when crying don't help and you can't compose yourself.
It is best to compose a poem, an honest verse of longing or simple song of hope.
That is why I'm singing...
Baby don't worry cause now I got your back. And every time you feel like crying,
I'm gonna try and make you laugh. And if I can't, if it just hurts too bad,
then we will wait for it to pass and I will keep you company
through those days so long and black.
And we'll keep working on the problem we know we'll never solve
Of Love's uneven remainders, our lives are fractions of a whole.
But if the world could remain within a frame like a painting on a wall.
Then I think we would see the beauty.
Then we would stand staring in awe at our still lives posed like a bowl of oranges,
like a story told by the fault lines and the soil.

Thirty Day Song Challenge
My friend L7 has been posting song titles and videos and stuff on Twitter all week and I finally just Googled this “Thirty Day Song Challenge”, found it here and here and decided to try it out on my blog. I haven’t done anything like this in a long time. So, what the hell, internet? Let’s get to it, shall we? (Feel free to join in, I am going to go ahead and tag my little friend Hespy over here so I am not playing alone!)
Day One: Your Favorite Song
This one, internet, is kind of a toughy. I hate being asked this question because there is no correct answer. This all depends on my mood. And generally speaking, my mood is not too…um…predictable. So, naturally, neither will my choice for “favorite song”.
I think that the song that has held significance for me for the longest time and that I still absolutely LOVE, is “Black” by Pearl Jam. I remember the first time that I heard it and it attaches to some very fond and beautiful memories of someone who has now passed away. I remember the first time I saw it performed live and I remember the way that it made my whole body shudder. Say what you will, internet, but Eddie Vedder is a supremely talented guy (and I refuse to fault him for growing up and not sounding like he did in 1992. Grunge is over. You learn, you grow. Get over it, haters.) and the lyrics of “Black” are beautifully melancholic. I love it.
The List:
Day One: Your Favorite Song (see above)
Day Two: Your Least Favorite Song
Day Three: A Song that Makes You Happy
Day Four: A Song that Makes You Sad
Day Five: A Song that Reminds You of Someone
Day Six: A Song that Reminds You of Somewhere
Day Seven: A Song that Reminds You of a Certain Event
Day Eight: A Song that You Know All the Words To
Day Nine: A Song that You Often Hear on the Radio

A Few Pieces of Awesome
Okay, so, I really should be working. Duh. But it is Friday, I am bored and my office is the temperature of the tundra. So, in order to keep my mind off of the fact that I am inches from unconsciousness and my toes are turning blue, I have been blog surfing. Or blog reading with a side of stumbling. Either way, here are a few pieces of awesomeness that I found today.
Drumroll please....
1. This made me giggle a lot and also made me think of that 80's movie "The Peanut Butter Solution". I likey. (Oh my GOD, ya'll! Do you remember this movie?)
2. Same guy. I think I want to marry him. I can't stop giggling. (Also, this will totally be my response the next time I am posed with this question.)
3. Thing Two walked in to the room while I was reading this the other day (read: laughing until tears were streaming down my face) and it is chock full of awesome.
4. I just read this just now. And I, again, am in tears. I want this guy to handle all of my affairs for me. (Especially any and all correspondence with AT&T. They only employ individuals with IQs less than 7.) I believe there is also one in which he attempted to pay a bill with a drawing of a spider with seven legs. But I will have to get back to you on that one, internet. After all, I should be working.
I really should get back to that working thing now, actually. Enjoy!

With OUR event just less than three weeks from now, I thought you guys should read up...so you will know what to expect when you GET THERE.
Invisible Children--A Nonprofit Organization offering help to the people of Uganda
How it Started
In the spring of 2003, three young filmmakers traveled to Africa in search of a story. What started out as a filmmaking adventure transformed into much more when these boys from Southern California discovered a tragedy that disgusted and inspired them, a tragedy where children are both the weapons and the victims.
After returning to the States, they created the documentary “Invisible Children: Rough Cut,” a film that exposes the tragic realities of northern Uganda.s night commuters and child soldiers.
The film was originally shown to friends and family, but has now been seen by millions of people. The overwhelming response has been, “How can I help?” To answer this question, the non-profit Invisible Children, Inc. was created, giving compassionate individuals an effective way to respond to the situation.
Who We Are
We are storytellers. We are visionaries, humanitarians, artists, and entrepreneurs. We are individuals part of a generation eager for change and willing to pursue it.
As a non-profit we work to transform apathy into activism. By documenting the lives of those living in regions of conflict and injustice, we hope to educate and inspire individuals in the Western world to use their unique voice for change. Our media creates an opportunity for people to become part of a grassroots movement that intelligently responds to what.s happening in the world.
But our work extends beyond our borders. In war-affected regions we focus on long-term development, working directly with individuals and institutions that are eager to realize their full potential. Through education and innovative economic opportunities, we partner with affected communities and strive to improve the quality of life for individuals living in conflict and post-conflict regions.
How We Make a Difference
Our approach to humanitarian work is founded in the strength and intelligence of the Ugandan community. We learned early on it was not only important but essential to heed the wisdom of people that had not only lived in the war, but were surviving it. People who would know better than anyone what the greatest needs were and the best ways to meet them. What we came to find is that while there have been many efforts to address the issues that stem from living and fighting in such a long-lasting war, the people of Uganda are asking for a future beyond the conflict.
Their pleas have become our development strategy.
All of our programming is a partnership between those of us at Invisible Children and those in the Ugandan community. We focus on long-term goals that enable children to take responsibility for their future and the future of their country. Our programs are carefully researched and developed initiatives that address the need for quality education, mentorships, the redevelopment of schools, resettlement from the camps, and financial stability.

Tranny Fierce
I don’t know where the weekend went, Internet. I know that there is sand in my ears and I look like a crack head (crackidad, if you’re nasty) but outside of that, I have no idea what happened this weekend. I can tell you that “Sex and the City” was worth every second and that Spliff and I smuggled a half pint of Captain Morgan into the theater with us and then we went home and exchanged boyfriend horror stories (which are always fun because we like to make fun of the morons that we’ve dated and then each other for dating them in the first place.) Turns out, we both dated guys who refused to take their shirts off during sex (WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH YOU?! If you are going to do to me what you are doing, then you can take your fucking shirt off, you pansy.) After our girl-fest, we met up with Anthony and The Kid for some debauchery. Because, honestly, it wouldn’t be a Friday without getting hit on by 50-year-old men at the dive bar down the street from our apartment. Anthony ended up on our couch until I, in true Criz spirit, woke him up by screaming about breakfast and fishing.
By the time the four of us were done with our breakfast, it was time to head out. We traded Anthony in for Rackamonie and drove out to The Jetties for some fishing and it was a great idea until I saw how much climbing was involved. Then I thought I might die. It took Spliff and me each about ten minutes just to get close enough to the water where fishing was possible because we winced every time we took a step. Rack and The Kid went easy on us though, they barely even laughed at us while we were picturing our own bloody deaths. In fact, they held our hands and pulled us up onto the rocks where we could sit down. And I will be the first to tell you that I planted my happy ass down on a rock and I didn’t move until it was time to change locations. Of course I had the cooler with the beer in it within reach because, seriously, there was no way that I was going to risk falling and breaking my face in the name of beer.
Rack caught the ugliest fish known to man and it wasn’t even something edible so he threw it back after I took a bunch of pictures (which will be posted soon) but that was really the only success. Well, that isn’t entirely true. Spliff and I managed to get hammered, thrown into the ocean and thoroughly annoy Rack and The Kid by repeating “Fierce, fierce, hot mess, fierce” over and over again. (If you haven’t seen that Amy Poehler sketch where she is making fun of Christian from Project Runway, you really should, it is totally tranny fierce.”) Either way, we had a lot of fun. We swam in the ocean, drank a lot of beer (between me and Spliff, we managed to polish off an 18-pack) in the sun (probably not the best idea) and then had dinner on a deck overlooking the intracoastal (where we drank more beer). After dinner, we stumbled out to Rack’s new jeep and took the ferry back home where I spent 20 minutes trying to get rid of the giant dreadlock that was once my very straight, very long hair. (I tried to get Rack or The Kid to just cut it off, but they are bitches and they never do what I tell them.)
Yesterday we dragged our sunburned asses out for more booze and debauchery with D, Ad Rock, Clifftopher, and Anthony. I’d like to say that I don’t know how my house got into the state of disarray that it is in right now, but I would be a liar. I know exactly what happened. Booze for breakfast and too much testosterone. We spent a few hours playing Kings and everything after that is sort of a mystery. Spliff fell asleep before 6pm and I was left with the boys. Strangely enough, they kept multiplying. Before I knew it, Rack was gone and there were two guys named Larry in his place. The last of the beers ended up at the beach in plastic cups while I played drunken Frisbee with The Larrys and Clifftopher and The Kid went swimming. Then there was a lot of dancing to The Eagles (don’t ask. “I can’t tell you why”.) and guitar playing in my room and then, all of a sudden, it was morning and I had to come to work.
I learned a few things this weekend.
1. I suck at fishing and am way better at drinking beer and getting sunburned.
2. I have to start doing brunch on Saturday when it is more acceptable to stay up really late acting like an idiot with your friends.
3. I might be too old to do any of this in the first place because more and more, after a weekend like this, I feel like I was run over by a train.
That’s all I got. I just want to thank all of you who were involved in the debaucherous, sloppy mess that was my weekend. I couldn’t do it without you. (Well, I could, but I don’t think it would be nearly as much fun!)

National Holidays
Happy Sex and the City Day, Internet!
Are you guys as excited as I am? Spliff bought the tickets and we are going somewhere for cosmos right before the movie (even though there is no way in holy hell I am drinking a cosmo, I am a dirty martini kind of girl) so that we can feel all…you know…festive.
This should be an actual fucking holiday. National Sex and the City Day. I wonder if we could, like, get a petition going or something. Who should I talk to about the plausibility of this? Hmmm…
This day is taking forever to end too. I have stacks of paperwork and dictations to do still and I haven’t stopped all day. The whole point of going to an early movie was so that I wouldn’t kill myself because the waiting was driving me batty. And here it is, only 3:30 and I feel like I have been working for a week and a half and the movie is still three and a half hours from now. Oh. My. God.
I really am sitting next to a ginormous stack of paperwork and a dictophone and pretending that they are not there. Probably not a great idea because, let’s face it, they aren’t going away (unless one of you wants to come here and…make them disappear…). I sort of want to cry. I am, however, SO EFFING GLAD that I have an office. Have I mentioned that? That I have an OFFICE? Yeah. Making blogging possible since 2008.
Alright, I have to attack the stack. (You like that, dontcha? I just made that up.) If you aren’t going to the movies tonight, you cannot be my friend. Peace out.

Peace out.

First Wine, Then Cosmos
It has been a long, long day, internet. Today has been the first day since I started my new job that I have been so busy that I haven’t had time to think. The girl I share an office with was out today, meaning that I was to cover for her and I felt pretty confident about it even though I have only been working here for two weeks. I have to say, I managed to come out of it with my head above water and am currently wrapping up the day, finally having enough time to take a little break and chill for a second. If I were still a full-time smoker, today would have been the day that I actually took smoke breaks. (I say “full-time” because I am still an occasional smoker, which is hard to wrap my head around because I never thought I would be the kind of person who could smoke just sometimes…weird.)
Anyway, it has been a long day and I am ready to get the hell out of dodge. Tonight, me and Spliff are hitting up a wine tasting at a little wine store near our house. I am excited because it is free and they are really knowledgeable there and they actually can suggest wines that are GOOD…instead of ones that taste like Strawberry Hill Boone’s Farm. (Don’t get me wrong, I used to love that stuff, but I had a bad experience that involved it, some Absolut, passing out on a stranger’s couch at a party and then the desire to wash my driveway to remove the bright red vomit so my mom wouldn’t see it. Thanks, Eppernepperhart, again for that…) Gag.
Tomorrow, we are going to see “Sex and the City” and holy Jesus, you guys, I am so freaking excited. Up until the show was over, I never even watched it. (That isn’t entirely true, Tory made me watch the first episode and then I happened to be at D’s when the last one aired, so I saw those two.) But once Spliff and I started having “Sex and the City” Night and spending our last dollars on one season at a time of the DVDs, it was over. I was hooked and now I am positive that I have seen every single episode 5 times. But seriously, I am stoked. Spliff and I were actually going to buy advance tickets. TO A MOVIE. (I don’t know if you understand the gravity of this situation, Internet, we don’t EVER go to movies let alone get excited enough about something to buy advance tickets! This is HUGE!) We are both even tearing up when the trailer comes on!
Okay, I am going to pop if I keep talking about this. It is time to close up shop and go the hell home!
I said GOOD DAY.

Top 25 Obsessions
I have been working really hard at maintaining the title of “Worst Blogger Ever” and I think I have been doing a pretty good job. So, to stay true to this title, I have decided not only to post a meme, but to post a meme that I have stolen from Sarah’s blog! YAY, ME!
I like music memes. They make me happy. Sue me.
Top 25 Most Played on my iPod!
25. Hallelujah – Jeff Buckley. Seriously. This is the most hauntingly beautiful song I have ever heard. And I know that he didn’t do it originally but it is my opinion that he did it best. R.I.P. Jeff.
24. Call Tyrone – Erykah Badu. I love, love, LOVE this song. It makes me want to get a loser boyfriend just so I can tell him about himself.
23. Ballad of Big Nothing – Elliott Smith. It’s Elliott Smith. That is all I have to say.
22. Hard Sun – Eddie Vedder. This song is from the “Into the Wild” soundtrack. It is incredible. Of course, I am biased because…well, I love Eddie Vedder.
21. Already Gone – The Eagles. This is my favorite Eagles song which is ironic because my father once told me that this is the song that reminds him of my mother. Eek. Either way, it makes me happy.
20. Volcano – Damien Rice. This song (and this album) sort of makes me want to slit my wrists but it really is beautiful. So…Ummm…
19. Letter to Elise – The Cure. Best song EVER.
18. Hang me up to Dry- The Cold War Kids. Honestly, I usually don’t like anything that I see advertized on MTV but when I heard this song, I knew it was love.
17. Amanda – Boston. I don’t know why I love this song so much. I really think it has something to do with Ricky Retardo.
16. Good Vibrations – The Beach Boys. There honestly is nothing better to listen to while lying on the beach. (Which is something I have been doing a lot of lately.)
15. As Is- Ani Difranco. She is a genius. A FUCKING GENIUS.
14. Rehab- Amy Winehouse. I have jumped on the Amy bandwagon. I really like her. She might be a lunatic junkie, but she makes me smile.
13. Sunshine Smile – Adorable. This song reminds me of Rack, Tory, Alex, some acid and trips to the mall. Because everyone knows that when you are 16 and on acid, the best place to go is to the mall.
12. Amber – 311. I like this song, but I don’t think that I listen to it this much. It reminds me of Zebrahead because for some reason, this was my ringtone.
11. Life by the Drop – Stevie Ray Vaughn. This song is like, two minutes long but it is awesome. It reminds me of Joey G’s in Madison, Indiana and that guy who played guitar with his teeth.
10. Come Pick Me Up- Ryan Adams. I think that I have explained this one before. I will listen to this song on repeat for days.
9. Shame on You – Indigo Girls. This is one of my favorite songs to sing in my car. At the top of my lungs. With the windows down so that I can dazzle (scare) pedestrians with my vocal stylings.
8. Black Hole-Greyhounds (with Ani Difranco). I didn’t know who these guys were until they opened for Mofro several years ago. They put on a great show but I really wish they would put out another album. (Hint, Hint, Guys.)
7. No Diggity- Blackstreet. This song is awesome and I listen to it constantly.
6. Ain’t No Sunshine – Bill Withers. L says this is MY song. Because I am a ray of sunshine. (She doesn’t say that, I just made that part up.)
5. Keep it Loose, Keep it Tight – Amos Lee. Listen to this song.
4. Wagon Wheel – Old Crow Medicine Show. I heard this song when I went to Raleigh to visit B and have been obsessed ever since. This entire album is amazing. Even if you don’t think that you like bluegrass. Go. Listen. Now.
3. Tiny Dancer – Elton John and Ryan Adams. This is the only thing that is better than the original Tiny Dancer.
2. When the Stars Go Blue – Ryan Adams. No, that country fucktard did not do this song originally.
1. Pearls on a String – Ryan Adams. Evidently, I listen to Ryan too much. I should branch out. I know. Anyway, I just downloaded this album pretty recently (Easy Tiger) and I love it. I love this song because it is freaking catchy as hell…and I can’t stop listening to it.
There are some songs that I listen to A LOT that didn’t make it onto this list and I am confused about that…but…this should give you a pretty good idea…So…what are YOU listening to, Internet?
